Giuliani : Truth isn't truth Psb : Truth must be truth Vice président : Mike Pence Psb : Pence-ing. | |

| 2019 – xxxxxx On November 14, “Burning the heather”, a new song from the forthcoming Pet Shop Boys album, is released. It features Bernard Butler on guitar. “In County Durham, where I used to live,” says Neil, “they burn the heather on the moors once a year to stimulate growth. That’s where the whole idea of the song came from. It’s a very Northern song. It’s about a stranger coming into a village somewhere. He’s quite full of himself, and he’s evidently quite a troubled person - he’s searching for something - and he ends up saying: if you’ve got a room, I’ll stay. It’s about loneliness, really, I think.” Neil had sent the lyric to Chris who set it to music. “A very unusual melody for us,” says Neil. “The chorus melody, it’s not like one of our tunes, really. It’s sort of folky. It’s what we used to call at Smash Hits ‘a scarf-waver’.”
2019 – xxxxxx On January xx, “Monkey business”, the third new song from the forthcoming Pet Shop Boys album, is released. Their first version of the song had been written in the Super era. The chorus existed first; the verses came later, inspired by Neil imagining what Mick Jagger might sing if this were a Rolling Stones song. “We actually did the demo with Stuart Price in Hansa,” says Neil, “and suddenly the whole thing was rocking.” “I would never have thought it was going to end up this good,” adds Chris. “We’ve actually written,” Neil concludes, “almost for the first time in our career, a groove song.”
2020 - January On January 24, a new Pet Shop Boys album, Hotspot, is released. This is the third album made with Stuart Price, one which they had decided some time ago would form some kind of trilogy, if only a loose one. “All three albums sound quite different,” Neil points out. “In that the first one is basically a dance album, the second one is a pop album, and this one…” Chris completes the thought: “I would say it’s a transitioning album. It has elements of the previous, but then it’s moving towards where we might be going next.” There is a sense in which they consider this a Berlin album – an initial ten-day recording session took place in Berlin in November 2018 at the legendary Hansa studios, and three of the songs (“Will-o-the-wisp”, “You are the one” and “Wedding in Berlin”) are about, or set in, Berlin. “Being in Hansa had a profound effect,” Neil reflects, “using this old equipment, as well as what we normally use. The album’s got a sound.” “It’s dirtier, isn’t it?” says Chris. “It sounds more analogue,” Neil elaborates. “Because it is, actually.” Nevertheless, recording continued in Los Angeles, where the album was also mixed; that had its own impact: “To mix, we went to the Record Plant where they made a lot of r’n’b and hip hop and contemporary pop records, and that had an influence on the sound as well.” Initially, Neil and Chris thought of giving the album a German title – “we wanted a German word that everyone knew in English” – but nothing suitable suggested itself. “And one day it occurred to me that Berlin was the hotspot of the Cold War,” says Neil. “Also ‘hotspot’ is an internet thing. And also, when I was a kid, it was an old-fashioned term for a popular club or something where you’d listen to the latest jazz or something. It just floated to the top and stayed there.”

And when I'm not playing it I'm *thinking* about playing it. SO much great stuff on there. And Chris is right: It's dirty. And groovy. And weirdly stripped back and dense at the same time. Much of it is very 80's."

"I first listened in the car on the way home from work and really disliked it. I don’t know if it was my mood, or autumnal expectations, but it all just fell flat. If this happens to you, hang in there. Just remember, this is not the album you might be expecting,..
I played it again in full when I got home and it was like listening to a different album.
This will be my seventh or eighth full listen.
Here goes.
** I have to add this: I frequently complain about the production on much PSB's output, but this is seriously hi-fi. Spacious, rich and the stereo placement is stunning, especially in the more textural songs those which features SFX. The sound quality has blown me away and been a very welcome surprise. **
1. Will-o-the-wisp
Low-rumbling swirly, rising synths at the start, immediately reminds me of Radiophonic, the beats kick in and it becomes something else entirely. Spunky electro refrain from Chris...it’s a stomper. The titular ‘Will-o-the-wisp’ appears to be a turned-straight old flame of our Neil’s, whom he’s happy to bitterly stalk across the streets of Berlin. I believe this is, indeed, Dark Techno. And it’s ace.
2. You are the one.
Sigh. This is just lovely, Neil’s still in Berlin and reminiscing about a lost love; ‘You are the one, I was the one”. He paints a collage of lost love “...a tingle tangle, chittering and chattering, by the fountains, spluttering and splattering”. The warm washes of synth strings flow over you until an almost dissonant piano joins the party to underscore the second half. The chorus later becomes “You are the one, I want the one”. At least I think it does. Oh man, it’s so lovely. Happy/sad.
3. Happy People.
It’s 1986! And then it’s the mid-90’s! It’s a multi-decade hybrid! It’s another stomper! And it's bloody euphoric! Near the start of the song a classic happy/sad Italo piano kicks in and it is GLORIOUS. “Happy people, living in a sad world” The verses are spoken word, Metamorphosis stylee and works wonderfully. Halfway in and the song f*cks off into the nearest club for a dance...Italo piano...multi-Neils sing/chant ‘People, happy people’...and, well, it just grows from there. “No one comes from nowhere, I leave and you arrive, t’s the rhythm of our history, it’s the beat behind our lives...”
LOVE Happy People.
4. Dreamland. You all know this one. I didn’t like it too much. Now, as part of the album, I like it much more. Weird that, isn’t it?
5. Hoping for a miracle. A sparse electro tick-tock gives way to, what I can only describe as, electro harpsichord/strings. Sort of. Lower-register Neil bemoans a celebrity life lacking in love and connections. A classic Chris Synth bubbles beneath washes of strings... drawing you in. “Everyone loves you, everyone needs you, you’ve got what it takes... ....hoping for a miracle, still hoping for a miracle..” The break brings a lightly-vocoderised, lost and lonely Neil: “Hello, is anybody out there?”.
Neil and Chris at their grown-up best.
-----
It’s almost bed time and I need a sarnie, so I’ll leave it here and try to finish off tomorrow if you’d like me to.
And, in case I haven’t been clear, there’s not a duff track in sight; all nine* tracks are fabulous. I am falling head over heels for this album.
*Track ten doesn't count.
